Lupo calls for unity in the face of the onslaught by the “mafias” seeking to return to power and the “new populists”

“We see populists who only look at their own navel, who seek to cause harm with lies and throw obstacles in the way,” warned the Minister of the Presidency.

In a Christmas message to Bolivians, the Minister of the Presidency, José Luis Lupo, called for unity in defense of the new direction the country is taking after 20 years, and in the face of the onslaught by the “mafias” that benefited from power during that time and are seeking to return, as well as the emergence of new populists “who only look at their own navel.”

He did so at a time when the country is experiencing a tug-of-war between those who support the adjustment measures adopted by the government of Rodrigo Paz Pereira to stabilize the economy, and certain social sectors mobilizing in opposition to them, including the Bolivian Workers’ Central (COB), the Federation of Mine Workers of Bolivia, and residents of the Cochabamba Tropics.

Indeed, on the day before Christmas, frictions were reported in La Paz between marchers called out by the COB and residents upset with the mobilizations, who days earlier had to endure protests by groups of miners who arrived in the seat of government and marched while detonating sticks of dynamite along their route.

In his message, Lupo said the government is working for Bolivians “who want to live in peace and who never again want to be hostages of the mafias that ran Bolivia for so many years.” He recalled that this was the decision made at the ballot box after 20 years of governments under the Movement for Socialism (MAS).

“We knew from day one that it would not be easy, because when the time of privileges ends, those who benefited from chaos react. Today we see those groups desperate, using resources and lies, trying to destabilize the country and generate divisions to regain a power they have already lost,” he asserted.

“People like Evo Morales and (Luis) Arce have only harmed the country and brought it to its knees, leading it into an economic, social, and moral crisis, with the complicity of the COB, which only fattened its privileges while the country grew poorer,” he added.

He then launched a remark seemingly directed at Vice President Edmand Lara, who a couple of days earlier declared himself an opponent of the government of Rodrigo Paz Pereira and rejected its economic measures, after nearly two months of recurrent attacks against the Head of State.

“We see populists who only look at their own navel, who seek to cause harm with lies and throw obstacles in the way, but we have something much stronger: conviction, legitimacy, and the clear mandate of the majority of Bolivians,” the Minister of the Presidency concluded.
