Senate rejects the 2026 State Budget over its spending-focused approach

The full Senate rejected on Thursday the bill for the 2026 General State Budget (PGE), despite the measure having been approved the previous day by the Chamber of Deputies. The decision followed a vote in which the document failed to secure the majority support required to continue its consideration.

Senator Tomasa Yarhui of Libre strongly criticized the content of the bill, stating that it does not respond to the country’s needs. “Approving a MAS budget is a disgrace, and our caucus will not support it,” she said.

Along the same lines, Libre senator José Manuel Ormachea reported that the rejection of the PGE was backed by different caucuses, including a faction of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC). According to his explanation, several lawmakers from the majority bloc agreed that the document should not be approved and voted against it.

Of the 33 senators present, only 12 voted in favor in the general vote, prompting Senate President Diego Ávila to formally declare the bill rejected.

Ormachea described the document as a “big-spending budget” drafted during the previous administration of the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) and said its approval was inappropriate. He also warned that if President Rodrigo Paz chooses to enact the budget, Supreme Decree 5503 could be rendered void due to contradictions between the two regulations, particularly regarding the financing of strategic companies.

The Senate’s rejection contrasts with what occurred on Wednesday in the Chamber of Deputies, where the 2026 PGE was approved after a lengthy session marked by interruptions. At the time, Deputy María Moreno reported that 70 of the 122 deputies present voted in favor, achieving a narrow majority in accordance with the rules.
