Former president and presidential candidate Jorge Tuto Quiroga offered the congressional bloc of the Libre alliance to the incoming government in order to guarantee governability from the Legislative Branch.

“Our support is in exchange for nothing (…) In exchange for nothing except ensuring governability,” Quiroga said during a press conference on Wednesday night.

Quiroga assessed Bolivia’s current democratic state, emphasizing the “absolute ungovernability” facing the current administration, and concluded that “we are ending almost as we began democracy under the UDP, with a Bolivia that is not governable.”

At present, Libre’s bloc has 12 senators and 39 deputies, for a total of 51 lawmakers which, together with those of the PDC, would not only achieve a majority but also reach the two-thirds threshold.

The former candidate ruled out any intent of engaging in “quota politics” or asking for government jobs in return, stating that the goal is to provide governability so the country can face the economic crisis.

He noted that they will also facilitate the Christian Democratic Party (PDC), the ruling force in the Legislative Branch, to lead the necessary committees to drive the regulatory changes required for deep transformations in the country.

“I find it essential that the president who intends to make changes also have the ability to rely on people who chair the committees so he does not get blackmailed,” said Quiroga, who also advised president-elect Rodrigo Paz “not to fall into the blackmail” of the Evismo faction.
