The vice-presidential debate, held this Sunday, October 5, has been criticized in recent hours. Political and economic analysts are proposing significant changes for the upcoming presidential debate; for example, they believe moderators should have the freedom to challenge candidates.
Economic analyst Gonzalo Chávez stated that the methodology of the next debate must change so that candidates use their time intelligently.
“Imagine a 20-minute block on the economy. Each candidate is given 10 minutes. The moderator asks a general question, and the first candidate decides to use 4 minutes to explain their plan. The second may respond in 3 minutes, and both save the remaining time for replies or cross-questions,” he explained.
Along those lines, Chávez asserted that a debate with free time management is an x-ray of leadership. “Anyone who cannot manage their time in a debate will hardly be able to do so in government.”
For political analyst Edgar Sánchez, the debate should be more interrogative, as he considers it monotonous. “There must be more questioning from the moderators, because that is the spirit of a debate, that is its purpose—to gain a deep understanding of a topic,” he told Urgente.bo.
Peña agrees, saying that moderators should play a more decisive role. “Otherwise, they’re just asking questions and keeping track of time, nothing more,” he said.
He also considers it important to establish key thematic areas, as he believes the most important issues were not addressed in the vice-presidential debate.

El debate vicepresidencial, efectuado este domingo, 5 de octubre, ha sido criticado en las últimas horas. Los analistas políticos y económicos proponen cambios significativos para el próximo debate presidencial; por ejemplo, consideran que los moderadores deberían tener espacio para interpelar.
El analista económico Gonzalo Chávez afirmó que hay que cambiar la metodología del próximo debate para que los candidatos usen su tiempo de forma inteligente.
“Imaginemos un bloque sobre economía de 20 minutos. A cada candidato se le asignan 10 minutos. El moderador hace una pregunta general y el primer candidato decide usar 4 minutos para explicar su plan. El segundo puede responder en 3 minutos, y ambos guardan el resto de su tiempo para réplicas o preguntas cruzadas”, explicó.
En esa línea, Chávez aseguró que un debate con administración libre del tiempo es una radiografía del liderazgo. “Quien no sabe gestionar su tiempo en un debate, difícilmente sabrá hacerlo en el gobierno”.
Para el analista político Edgar Sánchez, el debate debe ser más interpelado, ya que considera que es monótono. “Tiene que haber más interpelación por parte de los moderadores porque ese es el espíritu del debate, porque ese es el sentido de un debate, conocer en profundidad un tema”, dijo a Urgente.bo.
Peña coincide, los moderadores deberían tener mayor incidencia. “De lo contrario son simples preguntas y controladores del tiempo nada más”, dijo.
Asimismo, ve importante establecer los ejes temáticos, ya que considera que no se ha tratado lo más importante en el debate vicepresidencial.
