Bolivian chess player Licael Roderick Ticona Rocabado, International Master and current national champion, made history at the World Junior Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship – Open, held in Lima from September 23 to 28, 2025.

At just 16 years old, Ticona shone in the rapid format, where he faced 74 elite international players. After playing nine games, he scored 7 points from seven victories and two defeats, finishing only half a point behind first place. This performance placed him fourth in the world and added 8.8 FIDE Rapid Elo points to his rating.

The young talent from Santa Cruz not only stood out for his global placement, but also became the best chess player from the Americas in the competition, consolidating his name among the continent’s most important prospects.

In the Blitz format, held on September 27 and 28, Ticona again showed an outstanding performance. He scored 9 points, tying for fourth place, although by tiebreaks he finished in sixth position, in a tournament that brought together 76 participants.

Licael’s result represents a historic milestone for Bolivian chess and projects the country into the world elite of this mind sport.
