Bolivia Verifica uncovers Bs 200,000 social media campaign against Tuto and Samuel

Investigators reached the page administrators, who then chose to go into hiding

An investigation published by the portal Bolivia Verifica revealed that between May and July of this year, a social media campaign was carried out with a Bs 200,000 investment to discredit two candidates: Jorge “Tuto” Quiroga and Samuel Doria Medina. Two websites based in Cochabamba were involved and benefited the candidate from Súmate, Manfred Reyes Villa.

“Although both profiles present themselves as pages that disseminate journalistic information, Bolivia Verifica noted that the content they share tends to favor the Súmate candidate, Manfred Reyes Villa, to the detriment of other candidates,” the investigation concluded, also providing examples of this bias.

The websites Click News and Bolivia News spread false information using the branding of international news channels. Investigative journalists Joaquín Martela and Adriana Olivera tracked down the administrators of the pages to obtain their responses.

Click News was created on August 13, 2015, under the name ‘Andes Cochabamba’. On April 19, 2022, it changed its name to ‘GYM 4 You’; then on August 2, 2022, it was renamed ‘Toy 4 You’ and, finally, on January 24, 2024, it adopted its current name. It is managed by 16 people, 15 of whom are in Bolivia and one in Mexico. According to its own information, it operates out of the city of Cochabamba,” the portal states.

The second page also changed names three times and adopted the name Bolivia News in February of this year. It has 12 operators—10 in Cochabamba and 2 in Mexico.

Upon contacting the page administrators, it was reported that Dagling Camacho Lazarte, administrator of Bolivia News, answered a call and said he would call back to “clarify” everything, but no further communication followed. In the other case, only an email and a phone number exist, the latter always turned off.
