La Paz became the setting yesterday [7/6/2025] for one of the most challenging urban competitions : urban Downhill, which brought together around a hundred national and international cyclists in a 3.8-kilometer extreme descent from El Alto to the “heart of La Paz.”

Out of 150 registered participants, only 100 passed the final evaluation stage, which assessed both technical equipment and skills. Many competitors lacked suitable bikes or sufficient experience to tackle the demanding course, according to the head of Sports for the municipality, Carmen Pozo.

“There were technical problems with the bikes—they weren’t ready. Some had cracks, handlebars came loose; so they weren’t prepared for the descent. And then, in terms of skills, many lacked experience and didn’t have what it takes to complete such a demanding route,” Pozo said in an interview with the Municipal News Agency. The course began in El Alto, descended through staircases and steep alleyways to the Mirador La Paz Park, connected with Cotahuma, and ended at the Parque de las Cebras.

Throughout the course, cyclists had to conquer at least 200 steps, steep ramps, tight turns, and 17 obstacles designed to test each rider’s skill and control.

Four categories were included: women, under-23, master, and elite. Among the competitors were a Colombian, two Chileans, and cyclists from various Bolivian departments such as Cochabamba, Tarija, and Sucre, along with a large local delegation. According to the organizers, the urban Downhill not only challenges the riders—it also showcases La Paz from a new perspective: its streets, its scenic overlooks, and its unique topography. “La Paz is showing off its streets and everything it has through this urban Downhill race,” Pozo emphasized.
