In the early hours of last Sunday, an unexpected act of bravery and professionalism unfolded on a bus from the “Unificada” company traveling from Santa Cruz to Sucre.

Mid-journey, a premature baby—at eight months of gestation—was born thanks to the quick response of Magalí Montecinos Guardia, a young student from Tupiza, Potosí.

Magalí, 24, is a Veterinary and Animal Science student at the Universidad Autónoma Tomás Frías. She was returning from a practical course in Santa Cruz, traveling alone, and carrying her surgical kit, which proved crucial in the emergency birth.

The situation arose when a 24-year-old mother began experiencing labor pains on the lower level of the bus, as described by Álvaro Erick Careaga Vaca Cortez on his Facebook page. Hearing her cries for help, Magalí immediately stepped in, taking responsibility for the emergency.

With no time to stop the bus or call for additional help, the student from Potosí used her veterinary knowledge and surgical tools to assist in the delivery of a baby boy, bringing him into the world under conditions that defied standard medical protocols.

Upon arrival in Sucre, the mother and her newborn were assisted by police and firefighters, who transported them by ambulance to the Women’s Hospital for medical attention, according to accounts shared on social media.

Online platforms also highlight that Magalí, the young student who helped with the birth, runs an animal shelter named after her and leads a non-profit organization called “ARCA” (Agrupación por el Cuidado y Respeto Animal) in Tupiza.
