Bolivians in the U.S. blend local flavors with the turkey tradition on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day, one of the most significant holidays in the United States, has also become a special occasion for Bolivians residing in the country.

This day not only brings together American families but also unites the Bolivian community, offering an opportunity to share, give thanks, and strengthen bonds while staying true to their cultural roots. The fusion of traditions highlights the richness and diversity of those who have made the United States their home without losing their Bolivian heart.

Some of their experiences

Paceña model Susy Diab, living in the U.S., celebrates Thanksgiving following her American husband’s traditions. “The celebration starts at 6:00 PM, and we do it very much the American way, as is customary here,” she says. For her, this date is an opportunity to connect and give thanks with her Bolivian friends, striking a balance between both cultures.

Sandro Ibañez, president of Agrobol, combines the best of both worlds on his Thanksgiving table. “We eat the traditional turkey, but we also include keperí and pork, to stay connected to our roots,” he explains. For Sandro, this day is also about the festive decorations and the family atmosphere that defines the occasion, reflecting the spirit of the holiday.

Carlos Rodríguez, a photographer from Beni who has been living in the U.S. for three years, recalls how he initially knew little about the celebration. “At first, it was just another day, and I spent it alone. But my neighbors invited me to join them, and that’s when I understood its meaning. Now, I host a dinner with my close ones,” he shares. Carlos emphasizes the importance of pausing to appreciate life’s blessings, which he now considers a meaningful tradition.

Cruceña Patricia Asbún, married to an American, celebrates Thanksgiving by combining the classic turkey with flavors from her homeland. “I cook duck with a cruceño twist so we don’t forget our roots. We also give thanks to God at the start of the dinner; it’s a very special family moment,” she mentions.
