A memorable event for Bolivian aviation. Through its social media, the national airline Ecojet announced that on Saturday, September 28, flight 303, which departed from the city of Trinidad to Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz, was the first commercial flight entirely crewed by women, from the captain, the co-pilot, to the cabin crew.

The crew was led by Captain Fernanda Guzmán, who is also Bolivia’s first female four-engine aircraft commander. She was accompanied by Captain Jaqueline Milán as co-pilot, Lesly Vargas as chief of cabin, and Emilia Flores as cabin assistant.

According to statistics, as of 2022, less than 12% of the workforce in civil aviation are women. Additionally, only 33% of women hold leadership positions in Bolivia.

“I studied aviation in Santa Cruz at Proboal and graduated at 18 as a private pilot and at 19 as a commercial co-pilot. I worked at Aerocon for a year as a co-pilot, then I went to Colombia for six years. In 2015, I returned, resumed my studies, and joined Ecojet in 2016, first as a co-pilot, and at the beginning of the year, I was promoted to Commander. I had a short experience in Chile with a private company, DAP, flying tourists to Antarctica, with a base in Punta Arenas. I was the first Bolivian woman to land there,” said Bolivian Commander Fernanda Guzmán in an interview with Marcelo Durán, editor of the page Valor Agregado.

On Tuesday morning, the four women who made history with this commercial flight were recognized for their achievement and emphasized that Bolivian women can achieve anything they set their minds to because they are determined and resolute.
