Mothers, for Them Everything is Possible | Madres, para ellas todo es posible

Editorial, El Deber:

Mother’s Day [in Bolivia is today May27th] is not just an occasion to celebrate the love and dedication of those who gave us life, but also a time to reflect on the challenges and achievements mothers face in their quest for a balance between work and family. In Bolivia, the business landscape reveals a reality worthy of recognition: 95% of companies are micro, small, and medium-sized, and 70% of these are led by women. However, most of these entrepreneurs are in the informal economy, struggling daily to ensure their own and their children’s subsistence.

The study ‘Financial Inclusion with a Gender Focus’ by UN Women Bolivia (2021) highlights a revealing fact: many Bolivian mothers choose independent activities or the creation of micro-enterprises as a solution to generate income while being close to their children. This dual role of mothers and entrepreneurs demands an admirable capacity for organization, resilience, and bravery.

The responsibility of child-rearing falls predominantly on women, a reality that underscores the inequality of roles in our society. Many mothers leave paid jobs to dedicate themselves to childcare, a decision that, although full of love and dedication, can also limit their professional and economic development opportunities. The need for income drives them to combine childcare with their businesses, a challenge that requires support and understanding from society.

In this context, it is essential to prioritize training and capacity development regardless of gender. Public administration must continue to promote women’s integration into the business world through social policies and legislation that promote equality and reduce wage gaps. Additionally, raising the visibility of women’s roles in the business sector is crucial for them to access higher responsibility positions and for their contributions to be valued appropriately.

Entrepreneurial mothers represent an example of effort and overcoming. They are women who, despite adversities, have decided to take control of their destiny and build a better future for themselves and their families. On Mother’s Day, we honor their indomitable spirit and recognize the importance of supporting them on their path to equality and prosperity.

We know that the path to equal roles in society is still long, but each step we take brings us closer to a reality where mothers do not have to choose between caring for their children and their professional development. Financial inclusion and the formalization of their businesses are key to this progress, allowing more entrepreneurial women to access resources, training, and opportunities that strengthen their ventures.

Today, we celebrate all the mothers who, with courage and determination, have transformed their dreams into tangible realities. Their work is a fundamental pillar in building a more equitable and just society. Happy Mother’s Day to all Bolivian entrepreneurs who inspire us with their example and teach us that, with effort and perseverance, everything is possible.
