A 66-year-old man almost died after being attacked by a jaguar in a pasture in the municipality of Concepción. During the attack, one of his dogs defended him until the wild animal let go, allowing the man to be assisted and his life saved.

The jaguar attack occurred in the man’s pasture, where he had gone to check after, days earlier, six other dogs and cows in the community had died from jaguar attacks. The feline surprised and attacked him, causing him multiple injuries.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, February 29, in the Monte Verde community, in the municipality of Concepción, where the victim, identified as Pío Aguirre Cruz, ended up seriously injured but was assisted by the community doctor and emergency transported to the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

According to community testimony, the man suffered head and arm injuries, with probable fractures as a result of scratches and bites caused by the jaguar.

The attack occurred when Pío Aguirre went to his pasture to check on his animals, considering that days earlier the jaguar had killed a cow’s calf. “He says the tiger’s (jaguar) tracks were heading to his pasture and he thought it was the same one that had killed six dogs in the community,” said a community member.

“The tiger (jaguar) suddenly appeared and after first attacking the dogs, pounced on him. He tried to defend himself with a machete; however, one of his dogs got him off; the man managed to be rescued by his daughter,” explained the community member.

Aguirre Cruz arrived completely bloody and the local doctor, in his own vehicle, transported him to Concepción (150 km).

The people of Monte Verde were left terrified, fearing being attacked by the jaguar.
