National productions have been present on the most important stages of world cinematography, winning important awards.
The organization Cinema Tropical, the main presenter of Latin American cinema in the United States, has highlighted the “exceptional year” that Bolivian cinema is having.
“This has been a benchmark year for Bolivian cinema. Not only with productions showing at the most prestigious festivals in the world, but also winning numerous awards, leaving an impressive mark on the international film circuit, consolidating an exciting generation of filmmakers”, introduces the article of the medium specialized in Latin American cinema, founded in 2001 with the mission of distributing, exhibiting and promoting the seventh art from Latin America.
The author of the report, Carlos Gutiérrez, assures that this season of good health began in September of last year, when Kiro Russo’s “The Great Movement” was selected to be part of the Horizontes section of the 78th Venice Film Festival, where it was awarded the Special Jury Prize. From then on, the film traveled through important cinematographic meetings, such as the New York Festival (USA) or the San Sebastián Festival (Spain). Its North American theatrical release is scheduled for August, when the Film at Lincoln Center opens in 2022.
Russo’s success was followed by Alejandro Loayza, son of renowned filmmaker Marcos Loayza, taking his first feature film, “Utama,” to the Sundance Film Festival last January. It took home the Grand Jury Prize in the competitive drama section. The film, a co-production between Bolivia, Uruguay and France, has been acquired by the Kino Lorber company, which will screen it in the United States in the second half of the year.
Gutiérrez, co-founder of Cinema Tropical, continues to list the events of this year of national cinema with the victory of the director born in Bolivia, Natalia López Gallardo, of the Silver Bear of the Jury Prize at the Berlin Festival 2022 with “Manto de Gemas”. “Possibly the most important award given to a Bolivian filmmaker at an international film festival,” he highlights. López Gallardo studied film at the Center for Cinematographic Training (CCC) in Mexico City and lives in Mexico for many years, along with her husband, Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas.
“The Visitor” points to the same successes, the fourth feature film by Cochabamba director Martín Boulocq, which premieres this week in the international competition of the Tribeca International Festival in New York. Other audiovisual directors making a presence in the international area are Daniela Cajías, from La Paz, who last year became the first woman to win the Goya award for best cinematography for “Las Niñas”, who also photographed this year the Spanish film “Alcarràs by Carla Simon.

Se llevó el Gran Premio del Jurado en la sección competitiva de drama. El filme, una coproducción entre Bolivia, Uruguay y Francia, ha sido adquirido por la compañía Kino Lorber, quien lo proyectará en territorio estadounidense en la segunda mitad del año.
Gutiérrez, cofundador de Cinema Tropical, continúa alistando los sucesos de este año del cine nacional con la victoria de la directora nacida en Bolivia, Natalia López Gallardo, del Oso de Plata del Premio del Jurado en el Festival de Berlín 2022 con “Manto de Gemas”. “Posiblemente, el premio más importante otorgado a un cineasta boliviano en un festival internacional de cine”, resalta. López Gallardo estudió cine en el Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC) en Ciudad de México y vive en México por muchos años, junto a su esposo, el cineasta mexicano Carlos Reygadas.
A los mismos éxitos apunta “El visitante”, el cuarto largometraje del director cochabambino Martín Boulocq, que se estrena esta semana en la competencia internacional del Festival Internacional de Tribeca en Nueva York. Otros realizadores audiovisuales haciendo presencia en el área internacional son la paceña Daniela Cajías, quien el año pasado se convirtió en la primera mujer en ganar el premio Goya a mejor dirección de fotografía por “Las niñas”, además fotografió este año la cinta española “Alcarràs” de Carla Simón.
