Criminales sueltos – Criminals on the loose

Editorial, Pagina Siete:

Unacceptable amnesty in favor of MAS

More than 1,000 people related to the MAS and who participated in violent acts and vandalism will benefit from the supreme decree of Amnesty and Humanitarian Pardon, approved by the Executive and which the Legislative is preparing to endorse. “Those colleagues who are harmed for no reason, what is wanted is that they be released from all criminal charges for which they have been prosecuted without any reason,” said the president of the Upper House, Andrónico Rodríguez.

This only confirms the abusive attitude of the MAS. It is nothing new, considering how the government acted during 14 years of its first term, persecuting opponents, controlling justice and trying to remain in power forever.

Now it is up to everyone who carried out violent acts during the sad days before and after the fall of Evo Morales in November 2019. In this phase of violence, inflamed by Morales himself, hundreds of people committed serious crimes, such as dynamiting footbridges, attack buses that were transporting protesters, shoot at opponents using firearms, attack women traveling from Potosí to La Paz to reinforce the protest, attack opponents with explosives, etc.

Among the most serious crimes of those terrible days is, however, the burning of 64 PumaKatari buses and the homes of journalist Casimira Lema and former Ombudsman Waldo Albarracín.

All this now the ruling party wants to erase as if nothing had happened, including the accusations against Evo Morales, which he requested from Bolivia, and later from Mexico, that food and water not enter the cities. The power in this case is destined to seek impunity.

Obviously, the other political side also committed crimes and excesses. To begin with, the houses of masista leaders were also burned. And then there were the events of Senkata and Sacaba, in which everything indicates that the uniformed men fired at the protesters. All this must be investigated and punished.

What the MAS wants, however, is only to investigate and punish the side of its adversaries, and give impunity to that of its adherents. A society cannot function like this, especially if it is called democratic. But clearly the authoritarian inclination of the MAS will make that party try to bypass its rivals whenever circumstances allow. In any case, the current regime should consider that the protests carried out against the Morales administration, and which ended with his resignation and flight, were precisely due to the accumulation of abuses of this type.
