Former minister proposes to postpone subnational elections for 60 days due to the outbreak of Covid-19
Ortiz recently walked away from the Democrats. He considers that authorities carry out electoral calculations that put the health of the population at risk
The former minister and former candidate for the Presidency, Óscar Ortiz, proposed this Monday to postpone the subnational elections for 60 days, due to the second wave of new infections with Covid-19 that the country is experiencing.
Through a video of him on social networks, the politician points out that “it has been more than 30 days since the second wave of Covid-19 arrived in Bolivia and the appropriate measures are not being taken, due to the electoral calculations that many authorities are making.”
He believes that delaying the elections, scheduled for March 7, by two months will prevent a “hospital collapse,” which is beginning to be felt in La Paz and Santa Cruz, the regions most affected by the outbreak.
“We must avoid having to go to a new confinement that will cause greater economic hardship to the population. Let’s avoid crowds, postpone elections and suspend campaigns to protect people’s lives and health,” Ortiz added.
The former minister recently left the Democrats, along with Vladimir Peña, due to differences in the decisions made by that party in the election of candidates. Before him he had also been removed from the Government of Jeanine Áñez.

El exministro y excandidato a la Presidencia, Óscar Ortiz, planteó este lunes postergar las elecciones subnacionales por 60 días, debido a la segunda ola de nuevos contagios con Covid-19 que vive el país.
Mediante un video en sus redes sociales, el político señala que “hace más de 30 días que la segunda ola de Covid-19 llegó a Bolivia y no se están tomando las medidas oportunas, debido a los cálculos electorales que están realizando muchas autoridades”.
Considera que diferir en dos meses los comicios, previstos para el 7 de marzo, evitará que exista un “colapso hospitalario”, que comienza a sentirse en La Paz y Santa Cruz, las regiones más afectadas por el rebrote.
“Debemos evitar que se tenga que ir a un nuevo confinamiento que causará mayores penurias económicas a la población. Evitemos aglomeraciones, posterguemos las elecciones y suspendamos las campañas para proteger la vida y la salud de la gente”, agregó Ortiz.
El exministro se alejó en el último tiempo de Demócratas, junto a Vladimir Peña, por diferencias en las decisiones que asumió ese partido en la elección de candidatos. Antes también había sido apartado del Gobierno de Jeanine Áñez.
