Two ways to vote
October 18 is not just any election. Democracy is at stake in Bolivia, after almost 14 years of an authoritarian government and after a transitional government that lacks the legitimacy provided by the ballot box. The ignorance of the results of the referendum of February 21, 2016, the qualification of Evo Morales as a candidate for life on behalf of the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, and the electoral fraud of 2019 have opened a deep crack in Bolivian democracy and have divided society in two: the militants and voters of the MAS and those who want exactly the opposite, that is, that the MAS loses the elections and that its leaders do not return to power. Precisely for this reason, there are only two ways to vote in these elections: in favor of the MAS or against the MAS.
Several polls indicate that the distance between the first and the second is narrow and that the MAS could win in the first round, so that, regardless of who the candidate is, calls have been heard and read to concentrate the vote on the second best positioned. Good sense must prevail when voting.
Dos formas de votar
La del 18 de octubre no es una elección cualquiera. Se juega la democracia en Bolivia, luego de casi 14 años de un gobierno de rasgos autoritarios y tras un gobierno de transición que carece de la legitimidad que dan las urnas. El desconocimiento de los resultados del referéndum del 21 de febrero de 2016, la habilitación de Evo Morales como candidato vitalicio por cuenta del Tribunal Constitucional y del Tribunal Supremo Electoral, y el fraude electoral del 2019 han abierto una grieta profunda en la democracia boliviana y han dividido a la sociedad en dos: los militantes y votantes del MAS y los que quieren exactamente lo contrario, es decir, que el MAS pierda las elecciones y que sus líderes no vuelvan al poder. Precisamente por eso, hay solo dos maneras de votar en estas elecciones: en favor del MAS o contra del MAS.
Varias encuestas indican que la distancia entre el primero y el segundo es estrecha y que el MAS podría ganar en primera vuelta, por lo que, independientemente de quién sea el candidato, se han escuchado y leído invocatorias a concentrar el voto en el segundo mejor posicionado. La sensatez debe primar a la hora de votar.
