Trump’s endorsement of President Añez
One of the most important political events in recent days has been the call made by US President Donald Trump to President Jeanine Añez, in which he offered his support and, incidentally, announced that that country will donate 250 respirators as a way helping to contain the coronavirus health crisis.
To have a memory, this is the first time that a US President has called on a Bolivian colleague to express his support publicly. Although Trump does not have a favorable international image, his country remains one of the most powerful in the world.
Trump’s call cannot mean anything other than a desire to explicitly let internal and external actors know that President Añez enjoys American support. The message, moreover, was produced just at the moment when the MAS started the initiative in the country, on several fronts, especially two, the legislative and the street fronts.
Once Morales’s party approved the law stating that the elections must be held no later than August 2, something that the ruling party rejects for sanitary and also obviously electoral reasons, Trump made his appearance. The official bulletin of the presidency indicated that the call lasted 25 minutes, a relatively long time that implies that it was not only a courtesy communication.
The United States is committed to seeking the resignation of Presidents Nicolás Maduro and Daniel Ortega, of Venezuela and Nicaragua, respectively, a task that has been much more difficult than expected a few years ago. Another of the US adversaries, Evo Morales, fell last November and then fled after orchestrating a fraudulent election and after 21 days of powerful and peaceful citizen protest. Since then, among other things due to errors by the Añez government, the MAS has been rearticulated and strengthened, to the point of being able to organize demonstrations, some violent, and cacerolazos in various areas of La Paz. Not to mention that it has unified its legislative bench and approved, without showing cracks, a law to call elections. For the US, a return of MAS to power would be a resounding failure.
That is when Trump emerges as a factor of support without a doubt important (although also liable to receive criticism from those who reject the American actions). What has happened is no less, it means that Bolivia is on the radar of the northern country and that it is interested in strengthening the visions contrary to those proclaimed by MAS. At least that’s the message.

El respaldo de Trump a la Presidenta Añez
Uno de los hechos políticos más importantes de los últimos días ha sido la llamada realizada por el mandatario estadounidense Donald Trump a la presidenta Jeanine Añez, en la que le ofreció su respaldo y, de paso, anunció que ese país donará 250 respiradores como una manera de ayudar a contener la crisis sanitaria del coronavirus.
Que se tenga memoria, esta es la primera vez que un Presidente estadounidense hace un llamado a un colega boliviano para expresarle apoyo de manera pública. Si bien Trump no tiene una favorable imagen internacional, su país sigue siendo uno de los más poderosos del mundo.
La llamada de Trump no puede significar otra cosa que un deseo de, explícitamente, hacerle saber a actores internos y externos que la presidenta Añez goza del apoyo estadounidense. El mensaje, además, se produjo justo en el momento en el que el MAS pasó a la iniciativa en el país, en varios frentes, especialmente dos, el legislativo y el de las calles.
Una vez que el partido de Morales aprobó la ley que establece que los comicios deben realizarse como máximo el 2 de agosto, algo que el oficialismo rechaza por razones sanitarias y también, obviamente, electorales, Trump hizo su aparición. El boletín oficial de la presidencia indicó que la llamada tuvo una duración de 25 minutos, un tiempo relativamente largo que implica que no solo se trató de una comunicación de cortesía.
EEUU está empeñado en procurar la renuncia de los presidentes Nicolás Maduro y Daniel Ortega, de Venezuela y Nicaragua respectivamente, una tarea que ha resultado mucho más difícil de lo que se esperaba hace unos años. Otro de los adversarios de EEUU, Evo Morales, cayó en noviembre pasado y luego fugó tras haber orquestado unas elecciones fraudulentas y después de 21 días de potente y pacífica protesta ciudadana. Desde entonces, entre otras cosas por errores del gobierno de Añez, el MAS se ha rearticulado y fortalecido, al punto de poder organizar manifestaciones, algunas violentas, y cacerolazos en diversas zonas de La Paz. Para no hablar de que ha unificado a su bancada legislativa y aprobado, sin mostrar fisuras, una ley de convocatoria a elecciones. Para EEUU, un retorno del MAS al poder sería un sonoro fracaso.
Es ahí cuando Trump surge como un factor de respaldo sin duda importante (aunque también pasible de recibir críticas de quienes rechazan las acciones estadounidenses). No es menor lo que ha sucedido, quiere decir que Bolivia está en el radar del país del norte y que le interesa que se fortalezcan las visiones contrarias a las que pregona el MAS. Por lo menos ése es el mensaje.
