Bernardo Guarachi: ‘I’m proud, I’ve fulfilled with Bolivia’

The mountaineer fulfilled his dream and with Bolivia: he made summit in the Seven Summits of the world when climbing the Vinson Massif last week.

Bolivian mountaineer Bernardo Guarachi fulfilled his dream and with Bolivia: he climbed the summit of the Seven Peaks of the world last week when climbing the Vinson Massif (4,892 meters above sea level) in Antarctica, the last snowy mountain missing, although It was not easy, since he was about to give up.

– How was your experience in Antarctica?

– I am the first Bolivian who has gone there; It is an important fact because it is what the mountaineering colleagues asked themselves: “Bolivia here? How is such a poor country here?” Then I said to myself, “I am among millionaires, I am not a millionaire, but I have left my mark, the Bolivian mark.”

This is important for Bolivia to move forward, not only with mountaineering but with many other things to always learn to finish and succeed.

– What did you feel when you reached your last of the Seven Summits?”

– When I got off the huge Russian plane that transported us, which is special, I arrived with a lot of emotion. When I went down I kissed the glacier, that’s my mark, my foot and a kiss.

There it is as if it were another planet because there are no people, there is nothing. I saw that there is nothing, not a little bug, little animal, nothing, it is a white and clean continent.

– How do you feel about being the first Bolivian to achieve the Seven Summits of the world?

– In everything I am the only one and first in everything: the 8,000 meters, first; the Seven Summits of the world, first; Get to Antarctica, first. I feel very happy, I am an important man, nobody has come to all this. I am proud because I have fulfilled with Bolivia.

– I understand that you had surgery before your trip …

– Yes, but it was weird, because to register and pay for the expedition, I went to the doctor to control everything. I was confirmed that I was totally healthy, but before I left I got sick of the gallbladder and had to have an emergency operation, that was on November 22.

But in another clinic they told me that I was not well operated and within a few days had to leave and I got rid of that because I couldn’t keep waiting, I had to go to Antarctica no matter what, because who was going to return all my money back to me.

– Was the expedition to the Vinson Massif complicated?

I always wondered why so many people left this mountain of the Seven Summits of the world last. I left it at the end because it was the smallest and easiest mountain to achieve, but in the end it was not so, it was even more difficult than Everest (the highest snowfall on the planet) because of the economic issue, the paperwork that is needed, the permits cannot be obtained easily, I had to hire the services of an American company to do the paperwork, then there was my surgery. But I overcame these obstacles.

– What was the most complicated moment?

– The most critical moment was to go from the base camp to the high camp because you have to move a lot of luggage to be able to withstand the cold. My backpack weighed more than 30 kilos, which I had to lift it lying down and we had to move several meters, we almost froze.

With 45 minutes left to reach the camp, an American and a Sherpa from Nepal arrived just as I was about to give up.

They helped us, loaded my backpack, from the Canadian and the Canadian carried the backpack from the Chinese woman. Even without a backpack, it cost me a lot to get to the camp. At that time we were 70 degrees below zero, it was terrible.

The next day we rested and a day later a storm began that caught us for four days. I was about to say that we go down because nobody was going to be able to help us if something happened, but the Chinese encouraged me, she said: “we are doing Seven Summits of the world, it is the last one, we cannot leave without making a peak,” we stayed another day and there the weather changed, it was sunny.

– How was the climbing?

– From 11 in the morning until 7 at night it was time to ascend. They were 8 hours of climbing with few breaks because we are professional climbers.

That day was sunny, but it was very cold and that’s why we were protected with special clothes and I guess it was 30 degrees below zero at the top.

– How was this trip funded?

– That was the most problematic point for me. They were three years working and that’s why I got to get a surgery. It is a huge load that I had to finish the Seven Summits, but I decided to tie my pants to pay for the trip myself and not wait for the support of the companies. Day and night I worked to pay this.

– How much was the investment?

– The expedition costs 42,000 dollars, but we have extra expenses, such as buying material, which is very expensive, and almost reached 50,000 dollars. I am indebted because I have done everything to work, I was not only an agency guide, I also dedicated myself to other things to quickly finance all this.

– Now that you have fulfilled the Seven Summits, what are your objectives from now on?

– I will continue climbing, but they will no longer be commitments as I did so far for Bolivia, this time it will be more personal, because I like doing it without pressure.

— ¿Cómo fue su experiencia en la Antártida?

— Soy el primer boliviano que ha llegado allá; es un hecho importante porque es lo que se preguntaban los colegas alpinistas: “¿Bolivia acá?, ¿cómo un país tan pobre acá?”, entonces me dije “estoy entre millonarios, no soy millonario, pero he dejado mi huella, la marca boliviana”.

Esto es importante para que Bolivia siga adelante, no solo con el alpinismo sino con muchas otras cosas para aprender siempre a terminar y triunfar.

—¿Qué sintió al llegar a su última de las Siete Cimas?

— Cuando bajé del enorme avión ruso que nos transportó, que es especial, he llegado con mucha emoción. Al bajar di un beso al glaciar, esa es mi marca, mi pie y un beso.

Allá es como si fuera otro planeta porque no hay gente, no hay nada. Vi que no hay nada, ni un bichito, animalito, nada, es un continente blanco y limpio.

— ¿Cómo se siente por ser el primer boliviano en lograr las Siete Cimas del mundo?

— En todo estoy siendo el único y primero en todo: los 8.000 metros, primero; las Siete Cimas del mundo, primero; llegar a la Antártida, primero. Me siento muy contento, soy un hombre importante, nadie ha llegado a todo esto. Estoy orgulloso porque he cumplido con Bolivia.

— Tengo entendido que fue operado antes de su viaje…

— Sí, pero fue raro, porque para inscribirme y pagarme la expedición, fui al médico para que me controle todo. Me confirmaron que estaba totalmente sano, pero antes de partir me puse mal de la vesícula y tuve que operarme de emergencia, eso fue el 22 de noviembre.

Pero en otra clínica me dijeron que no estaba bien operado y a pocos días para partir me deshice de eso porque no podía seguir esperando, tenía que sí o sí ir a la Antártida, porque toda mi plata quién me la iba a devolver.

— ¿Fue complicada la expedición al Macizo Vinson?

— Siempre me pregunté porqué tanta gente dejó a último esta montaña de las Siete Cimas del mundo. Yo lo dejé al final porque era la montaña más pequeña y más fácil de poder lograr, pero al final no fue así, incluso fue más difícil que el Everest (el nevado más alto del planeta) por el tema económico, los papeleos que se hace, los permisos no se pueden obtener fácilmente, tenía que contratar los servicios de una empresa americana para que haga los papeleos, luego fue mi operación. Pero estos obstáculos los vencí.

— ¿Cuál fue el momento más complicado?

— El momento más crítico fue ir del campamento base al campamento alto porque hay que trasladar un montón de equipaje para poder soportar el frío. Mi mochila pesaba más de 30 kilos, la cual tenía que alzarla echado y teníamos que avanzar varios metros, casi nos congelamos.

Faltando 45 minutos para llegar al campamento, un norteamericano y un Sherpa de Nepal llegaron justo cuando estaba por rendirme.

Nos ayudaron, cargaron mi mochila, del canadiense y el canadiense llevó la mochila de la china. Sin mochila igual me costó mucho llegar al campamento. En ese momento estábamos a 70 grados bajo cero, fue terrible.

Al día siguiente descansamos y un día después comenzó una tormenta que nos atrapó cuatro días. Estaba por decir que bajemos porque nadie nos iba a poder ayudar si pasaba algo, pero la china me animó, me dijo: “estamos haciendo Siete Cimas del mundo, es la última, no podemos irnos sin hacer cima”, nos quedamos otro día y ahí cambió el clima, hizo sol.

— ¿Cómo fue el ascenso?

— Desde las 11 de la mañana hasta las 7 de la noche fue el momento de ascender. Fueron 8 horas de subida con pocos descansos porque somos escaladores profesionales.

Ese día estuvo soleado, pero hacía un frío tremendo y por eso estuvimos protegidos con ropa especial y supongo que estuvo 30 grados bajo cero en la cima.

—¿Cómo se financió este viaje?

— Ese fue el punto más problemático para mí. Fueron tres años trabajando y por eso llegué a operarme. Es un peso enorme que tenía el acabar las Siete Cimas, pero decidí amarrarme los pantalones para pagarme yo mismo el viaje y no esperar el respaldo de las empresas. Día y noche he trabajado para pagarme esto.

— ¿Cuánto fue la inversión?

— La expedición cuesta 42.000 dólares, pero tenemos gastos extras, como comprar material, que es carísimo, y casi llegó a 50.000 dólares. Estoy endeudado porque he hecho de todo para trabajar, no solo estuve de guía en agencia, me dediqué también a otras cosas para financiar rápidamente todo esto.

— Ahora que cumplió con las Siete Cimas, ¿Qué objetivos tiene de ahora en adelante?

— Voy a seguir escalando, pero ya no serán compromisos como lo hice hasta ahora por Bolivia, esta vez será más personal, porque me gusta hacerlo sin presiones.
