ABI reports in El Dia:
Health Minister confirmed five cases of Zika in Bolivia
Health Minister, Ariana Campero, confirmed Sunday in La Paz so far five zika cases have been confirmed in Bolivia, three imported and two indigenous cases, and stated that the Government is taking all provisions to prevent such disease, which has become a global threat, to be spreading in the country.
In an interview with the program “The People’s News” of Bolivia Tv, Campero said that the vector of the disease, the Aedes aegypti mosquito, is the same that transmits dengue and chikungunya.
“The case reports. We have 2,017 cases of chinkugunya, 5 cases of Zika, of which 3 have been imported from Brazil and two locals, 1,222 cases of dengue Rains have intensified the infestation vector”, she said.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said last week the zika was regarded as a global health emergency virus, because the mosquito-borne infection has been linked to neurological diseases in newborn infants.
The Minister of Health of Bolivia stated that the campaign against the three diseases that are caused by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, what matters is not only diagnose the symptoms but eliminate the vector, because that way there is no risk of catching any of the three diseases.
In that vein, she said it was important the cooperation of municipalities and governments to intensify the campaign, but also help families living in endemic regions, they must avoid the mosquito to reproduce in containers with water, as vases, buckets and other containers where the mosquito lays its eggs.
She recalled that the mosquito lays her eggs on the edges of the containers with clear water and “not necessarily stagnant water” which subsequently becomes larva and then in other mosquitoes.
She explained that the spraying, which is also taking place in several regions, particularly in border towns in the north, only removes the adult mosquito and not the larvae, which in her opinion, are the greatest danger.
The Minister of Health reported that last week attended a meeting of ministers of the Community of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) in the Uruguayan city of Montevideo, where member countries determined to take joint actions for integrated management strategy.
“The idea is not only diagnose the symptoms but eliminate the vector, because otherwise, there is the risk of catching any of the three diseases,” she said.
This is a global threat with a domestic solution, we need to increase awareness to eliminate mosquitos, the solution and prevention lies only in the hands of the individual household. We cannot ask for solutions on simple matters to this ochlocracy, we have to be real, we can make it happen without relying on this government or any other!
