DIPLOMATIC FRICTION

Foreign Ministry calls for “mutual respect” after reproach from British ambassador over the Malvinas/Falklands case

Ambassador Porter considered Bolivia’s position on the Falklands unacceptable.

After the United Kingdom’s ambassador to Bolivia, Richard Porter, posted videos criticizing a Bolivian statement supporting Argentina’s claim over the Malvinas/Falklands Islands, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded with a communiqué calling for “mutual respect” and denying interference in the affairs of other countries.

The controversy arose after a vice minister participated in the ceremony for the Day of the Fallen in the Malvinas War and following a Foreign Ministry press release stating that Bolivia will continue to support Argentina in this cause.

The United Kingdom’s ambassador expressed his disappointment with the Foreign Ministry over that position, which he deemed an unacceptable intervention, arguing that the population of the Falkland Islands had already decided in a referendum to remain British.

In its statement, the Foreign Ministry recalled “that the question of the Malvinas Islands is treated by the United Nations as a situation still pending.”

It also emphasized the importance of diplomatic missions in the country “observing the appropriate institutional channels and international practices of mutual respect, avoiding the use of communication mechanisms that could hinder constructive dialogue.”

The Foreign Ministry rejected having engaged in “interference in the internal affairs of other States,” stating instead that “its pronouncements are strictly framed within the legitimate exercise of a position based on international law and its historic commitment to promoting peace.”

Additionally, it reminded that due respect must be observed for national symbols, including those identifying official institutions. In the British ambassador’s videos, the Foreign Ministry building and a Bolivian flag appear in the background.
