Governor Alejandro Unzueta delivered, on Friday, the resolution declaring the neighborhood association Lomita Calatayud an archaeological site of the people of Beni. It is located near the Ibare River, west of the municipality of Trinidad.

He expressed his satisfaction in delivering the document to the true guardians of Benian archaeology, who bear the responsibility of preserving that heritage.

“We previously held a meeting where they reported to us that illegal loggers are cutting down our trees, destroying our natural heritage. We are not against progress — families need to survive — but we must respect our archaeological sites and the foundations of our Mojeño identity,” Unzueta stated.

Thus, the departmental authority delivered the official resolution “to the true guardians of this ancestral heritage, emphasizing the importance of respecting and preserving our archaeological sites, our reserves, and our culture.”

Residents of the neighborhood emphasized that on this millenary hill, more than 250 meters in diameter, rest “bone and ceramic remains that speak of those who inhabited these lands long before us.”
