By El Diario:

The Andean cat, found in the wild in Bolivia, is at high risk of extinction in the Apolobamba National Integrated Management Natural Area, as gold mining, habitat fragmentation, and extensive llama and alpaca ranching—which encroach on wetlands and bodies of water vital to the small feline—could lead to its disappearance.

In response to this threat, residents of the Apacheta, Cañuhuma, and Suni Alpaqueros communities, along with the Pukina Nation, are being trained in the conservation of the species, known as “a sacred animal” since pre-Hispanic times.
