What Arce promises is much more serious | Lo que Arce promete es mucho más serio

Ernesto Bascope, Los Tiempos:

Masismo 2.0, an efficient despotism

Like many, I made the mistake of believing that Luis Arce would be a decorative president, just a pawn of Morales willing to blindly obey his former master.

With the departure of the incompetent Mr. Chávez from the Attorney General’s Office, the former bureaucrat seeks more than just maintaining power. Having gotten rid of that creature of Morales signals, in my opinion, that arcismo no longer has complexes or fear of showing his ambition. They are convinced that, ultimately, his project will replace the former leader and what he represents.

This should worry honest citizens, those who never committed to the MAS or sold their conscience to the national left.

Arce and his lieutenants know perfectly how the bureaucratic machinery works. They exist thanks to her and move within her as in their own house. They understand the possibilities of the State to control, indoctrinate and intimidate the population. For this reason, the current Government can dispense with any emotional and mystical dimension, elements quite common in the Morales period.

When they need it, they will resort to some myths that have proven useful as propaganda elements, such as everything related to the “indigenous.” However, they will not hesitate to use more effective control tools: the purchase of loyalties with generous perks or the justice system, for the most recalcitrant.

Arce does not inspire the same tawdry lyricism as his party leader. No one writes poems in his honor nor will they make movies about his life. But I suspect that, if his project comes to fruition, he will have much tighter control over this society and our lives than the escaped leader ever dreamed of.

It’s no longer worth worrying about Morales. What Arce promises is much more serious. What will we do about it?
