Mountaineers return to the reality of the coronavirus in Bolivia after 46 days

La Paz, Mar 30 (EFE) .- A group of mountaineers spent 46 days in different peaks of La Paz in a training course without a signal, without the Internet and without knowing the measures taken by the Bolivian transitional government against the coronavirus, until they were evacuated to return to the “deserted” city due to quarantine.

On February 10, the group of 18 people, including mountaineers from Germany, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and France, started a course on “Trekking guides and expedition leaders,” Sergio Condori, one of the Bolivian guides, told Efe.

NO CONTACT IN THE MOUNTAIN

Participants climbed different mountains such as Huayna Potosí, a 6,088-meter peak near La Paz, to implement rescue techniques, glaciology and risk management, among others.

The participants were in the mountains most of the time and the food reached the “access points” of the journey, like shelters, but they had no signal on their cell phones and little battery on the radios.

“We have had very little information, we have not understood so well what was happening, in the mountains there is no signal and we hardly had batteries for our radios that were charged on solar panels,” Condori said.

THE EVACUATION

The last stop of the course was held in the Huayna Potosí mountain, which they arrived on March 25, and it was there that they learned of the measures ordered by the transitional government, such as the total quarantine at the national level and the closure of borders.

“Understanding the situation, we out of respect and to comply with the protocol, because at no time did we want to break any rule, we asked the firefighters for the rescue,” he said.

Firefighters evacuated 13 of the participants on March 27, since the remaining five lived in the nearby towns, and took them to the city of La Paz to protect themselves and comply with the provisions, after 46 days of living in the heights.

A DESERT CITY

Returning to the city has been “a shock” for all of them, seeing “deserted” streets, all closed establishments and most of the population wearing masks and gloves, said the Bolivian mountaineer.

“It has been totally impressive because we have left in a normal situation with the streets full, with people dancing, with businesses open, but we returned to an empty city, we sensed panic and paranoia,” he said.

According to the latest report from the Ministry of Health, in Bolivia there are 96 positive cases of COVID-19 and four people died in the last hours.

THE SITUATION OF FOREIGNERS

Condori commented that the foreigners went through a medical check-up to find out their health situation and all are well.

Now they are all quarantined and the association of guides in the country began the coordination so that the four French and the three Chileans return to their respective countries.

While mountaineers from Germany and Colombia reside in Bolivia, according to Condori.

Bolivia is in a state of health emergency in an attempt to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, which includes the closing of borders and the suspension of flights, although some are planned for humanitarian reasons to evacuate foreigners. EFE

Montañistas vuelven a la realidad del coronavirus en Bolivia tras 46 días

La Paz, 30 mar (EFE).- Un grupo de montañistas pasó 46 días en distintos picos de La Paz en un curso de formación sin señal, sin internet y sin conocer las medidas tomadas por el Gobierno transitorio de Bolivia ante el coronavirus, hasta que fueron evacuados para volver a la ciudad “desierta” por la cuarentena.

El grupo de 18 personas, entre ellos montañistas de Alemania, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia y Francia, inició el pasado 10 de febrero un curso de “Guías de trekking y líderes de expediciones”, contó a Efe Sergio Condori, uno de los guías bolivianos.

SIN CONTACTO EN LA MONTAÑA

Los participantes ascendieron distintas montañas como el Huayna Potosí, un pico de 6.088 metros de altitud cerca a La Paz, para poner en práctica técnicas de rescate, glaciología y gestión de riesgos, entre otros.

Los participantes estaban en la montaña la mayor parte del tiempo y la comida llegaba a “los puntos de acceso” de la travesía, como refugios, pero no tenían señal en los celulares y poca batería en las radios.

“Hemos tenido muy poca información, no hemos comprendido tan bien lo que sucedía, en la montaña no hay señal y apenas teníamos baterías para nuestras radios que se cargaban en paneles solares”, relató Condori.

LA EVACUACIÓN

La última parada del curso se realizaba en el nevado del Huayna Potosí, al que llegaron el pasado 25 de marzo, y fue ahí donde se enteraron de las medidas dispuestas por el Gobierno transitorio, como la cuarentena total a nivel nacional y el cierre de fronteras.

“Al entender la situación, nosotros por respeto y para cumplir con el protocolo, porque en ningún momento queríamos romper ninguna regla, solicitamos a los bomberos la extracción”, manifestó.

Los bomberos evacuaron el pasado 27 de marzo a 13 de los participantes, ya que los cinco restantes vivían en los pueblos cercanos, y los llevaron hasta la ciudad de La Paz para que se resguarden y cumplan con las disposiciones, después de 46 días de vivir en las alturas.

UNA CIUDAD DESIERTA

El volver a la ciudad ha sido “un shock” para todos ellos, al ver calles “desiertas”, todos los establecimientos cerrados y la mayor parte de la población usando barbijos y guantes, indicó el montañista boliviano.

“Ha sido totalmente impresionante porque nosotros hemos partido en una situación normal con las calles llenas, con las personas bailando, con los negocios abiertos, pero volvimos a una ciudad vacía, se sentía el pánico y la paranoia”, indicó.

De acuerdo al último reporte del Ministerio de Salud, en Bolivia hay 96 casos positivos de COVID-19 y cuatro personas fallecieron en las últimas horas.

LA SITUACIÓN DE LOS EXTRANJEROS

Condori comentó que los extranjeros pasaron por un chequeo médico para conocer su situación de salud y todos se encuentran bien.

Ahora todos cumplen la cuarentena y la asociación de guías en el país inició la coordinación para que los cuatro franceses y los tres chilenos regresen a sus respectivos países.

En tanto los montañistas de Alemania y Colombia residen en Bolivia, según Condori.

Bolivia se encuentra en estado de emergencia sanitaria en un intento de evitar la propagación del coronavirus, que incluye el cierre de fronteras y la suspensión de vuelos, aunque están previstos algunos por motivos humanitarios para evacuar a extranjeros. EFE
