The country fell back on democratic freedoms

• The Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference, Aurelio Pesoa, referred to the ruling of the Constitutional Court that has ignored the referendums of 2009 and 2016
• The UN recalled that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights places in governments the responsibility to ensure the enjoyment of inalienable rights and freedoms

The secretary general of the Episcopal Conference (CEB), Aurelio Pesoa, said yesterday, during his Sunday homily, that 2017 was a year full of setbacks for the country, in democratic matters, respect for life and the environment.

“We can say that we have stepped back in democratic rights and freedoms, when through the ruling of the Constitutional Court two referendums are unknown, both initiatives promoted by the current government,” said the prelate.

The Secretary General of the CEB held that the country has also backed down in the defense of the value of life, with the approval of Article 157 of the new Criminal Code that extends the causes of abortion.

On the other hand, the Secretary General of the United Nations Organization, Antonio Guterres, in a message on the “Human Rights Day”, recalled that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights places in governments the responsibility to ensure the enjoyment of of inalienable rights and freedoms.

It also affirms that human rights are the basis of peaceful societies and sustainable development; nevertheless, one can notice in the regions “a disturbing hostility towards human rights”.
