Ombudsman calls for freedom

Screen Shot 2015-03-11 at 11.07.10 AMThe Ombudsman Rolando Villena, instructed yesterday that the Ombudsman’s institution, get involved through appropriate action, including the filing of an action of freedom, for the immediate cessation of imprisonment of journalist Carlos Quisbert, who was sent to San Pedro prison on Monday [03/09/2015] after being detained in juvenile rehabilitation center, Qalauma, where he went for his journalistic work on Sunday.

Screen Shot 2015-03-12 at 10.13.52 AM“We are very concerned about the way Carlos was detained, arbitrary and illegal confinement to which he was subjected, denial of access to the research notebook and the incomprehensible decision of the judge who heard the case, he was sent to the San Pedro prison, regardless of any legal arguments justifying his defense by being released. In addition we are alarmed of the treatment being given, to press freedom and respect for the work of journalists and communicators, whose rights are clearly determined by the State Constitution and the Press Law,” the official said.

Screen Shot 2015-03-11 at 11.06.36 AMThe Ombudsman noted that, when knowing the fact, instructed his representative of El Alto to seek full details of the case, to take appropriate action so that it immediately demand for the release of the journalist, citing it as an unacceptable way to handle this issue by the Public Ministry “especially if, deep down, is a case where the prosecution has shown an extreme level of slowness and inability to clarify the causes and responsible for the death of baby Alexander”.
