Explosive attack on customs office highlights contraband, cargo theft, and ground disruption risks in Bolivia-Chile border

Event

On 25 December, a group of about 60 individuals armed with assault rifles and explosives breached a six-metre wall at a customs office’s warehouses in Tambo Quemado in the Bolivian border with Chile to steal a contraband truck seized by Bolivian authorities four days earlier.

In addition to the truck, the individuals took laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices stored at the warehouses – worth about USD208,000. The military was deployed to secure the area, and some operations at customs were temporarily suspended. Bolivian officials quoted in the media have identified the perpetrators as local residents, including some community leaders.
